The Piper Trail, though 8.4 miles round trip with 2800 feet vertical, is a relatively kind trail. There is a nice variety of terrain and many good views during the second half of the climb culminating in the ledges for the last .4 mile. There a few somewhat tricky areas near the summit, but nothing patience and thought cannot overcome. The route for first 100 yards or so from the beginning of the summit ledges can be a bit difficult to ascertain as the blazes are somewhat scarce there. The rest is well blazed. It is important that anyone unfamiliar with the mountain study a map beforehand and take it with them. We found a group that was going to descend Piper and hope to end up at Liberty; that would be a long road walk. On another climb I saw a descending group arriving at the Piper trailhead expecting to be at the Champney trailhead. |
