Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Slippery Brook was easy to cross, trekking poles were helpful
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: FR 17 was in good shape, USFS did great job hardening the banks at site of washout from 3-4 years ago with very large boulder rip-rap. There was blow-down on trail just before Mountain Pond I took side trip to check it out. It was moderate size less than 12" diameter. It was difficult to bypass requires scramble to get over it.

Comments
Comments: Temps were in 70’s down at bottom of valley. Black flies were out in force, but not biting heavily. Good thing as I hadn’t thought to pack the bug juice although I had treated my pants and top with permethrin so I wasn’t totally defenseless.

I left main road to take 17A to logging roads across Slippery Brook. Crossing was trivial with assistance from trekking poles. I startled cow and calf moose and two bear cubs clambering up a tree almost at same moment in time and in same spot. I wonder if the two mothers were bragging about their kids to each other??? Would have been nice to try to get photo of the cubs, but I was not interested in meeting up with mamma bear so I proceeded on.

I had waypoint marked for clearing visible from Aerial Photos. It was a bit out of my way ,but I wnt for it just in case it offered some views. Clear cut was in advanced state of regeneration so wasn’t really worth the trouble. Shortly after leaving the cut I came across two nice antlers shortly after starting my whack. They were nice specimens so I decided to try and carry them out somehow. I carted them up hill to steep terrain with birch glades start and left them marking a way point in my phone.

I skipped visiting Sable. It proved to be fun navigation exercise to return to spot where I left them. Summit of Chandler is wonderful spruce and birch glade terrain. Great day out was had.

I did quick side trip to Mountain Pond. There is one fairly large blow-down at point in trail just before the pond. Not overly thick could be dealt with not too big of saw. Black flies were swarming at pond. Worst bugs all day!!!!!!!!!
