| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
only 3 or 4 of a dozen or more spaces were occupied at the Glencliff parking lot on High St. this morning (Wed.) |
| Surface Conditions: |
Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery |
| Recommended Equipment: |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Numerous small brooks, no problems apart from mud |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Glencliff Trail (AT) is in very good shape, no significant mud except right at the bottom, but there are many damp rocks higher up that can be quite slippery. Carriage Rd. below the Snapper Trail junction has the look and feel of an unmaintained old woods road (which it is); this and Hurricane Tr. both have lots of debris and muddy sections, plus numerous blow-downs (some seem pretty old), one on Hurricane requires a minor bushwack to get around. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
saw one dog, all trails seem dog-friendly |
| Bugs: |
none worth mentioning; used Deet to repel possible ticks as Carriage Rd. and Hurricane Trails have lots of vegetation encroaching on the walkway |

| Comments: |
I went up via Glencliff and actually climbed only to the south peak of Moosilauke. The Hurricane Trail is very steep and involves 900 feet of elevation gain (my edition of the AMC Guide says 1800, but even after climbing 3200' to the south peak I did not feel I had climbed 5000 feet total). Some sections of the Hurricane Trail are quite beautiful, but others are heavily eroded or full of debris, making it hard to appreciate. Hurricane Mtn. is only about 3000' high, and the trail does not even go quite to the summit, but this is not an easy trail. I followed this route out of curiosity and to avoid having to negotiate wet rocks on the way down Glencliff, but I don't think I'd want to follow this route again unless the trails were drier and/or a bit more maintained. |
