The black flies were heavy on the Smarts Brook Trail. I did not bring/wear bug spray, but I probably should have. |

I had not done this hike before and yes, the Smarts Brook Trail is the "road less followed." I saw nobody on this trail, in both directions. I did see 7 people total, all on the Sandwich Mtn Trail. At about 1.3 miles on the Smarts Brook trail, on the right side where there is a pond, I was able to watch several beavers just swimming around in the middle of the day, perhaps a benefit of the trail's quiet nature. Also something interesting, is that in the 0.6 mile from Smarts Brook Trail to Sandwich Dome, I looked to the right in the forest and I saw this mossy looking "swan," see my picture attached. Other than those sightings, I only saw frogs and toads and plenty of deer droppings. It was a peaceful and quiet journey and I enjoyed napping on the rock at Jennings Peak. |
