Peaks Shelburne Moriah Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Rattle River Trail, Kenduskeag Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, June 2, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Fairly small dirt lot; No services; Not a fee area. Had about 8 cars when I arrived at 12PM and 4 left when I got out of woods around 10PM.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Three actual river crossings all very easy. All minor brooks very low or dry. I actually missed the first crossing initially. In a wide sandy area several side trails continue up the bank and the river here has large piles of washout debris so it didn't look like an actual crossing. When I backtracked I noticed a small stone staircase at the far bank.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Generally in good condition. Quite a few blowdowns, particularly first 3 miles or so but they were generally all easy step overs. Several were high enough to break stride though to negotiate. Some areas could use a minor brushing although they don't affect navigation. Wouldn't mind seeing more blazes in the stretch from the shelter to the start of steep climb. Coming out in the dark in several areas there appeared to be more than one trail with the leaves on the ground.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Should be fine. The Kenduskeag Trail has a lot of slick ledges which might be a minor issue for inexperienced dogs. LOT OF MUD on this route too so be prepared for a dirty dog when you get out of the woods.
Bugs
Bugs: Bugs were INSANE today. Mosquitos started at the trailhead, were plentiful and were biting. In the upper elevations the gnats were also out in force and biting. I had actually intended to stay out overnight but I got absolutely shredded trying to set up my hammock so I decided to bail out. Unless you were in the breeze on the open ledges you were getting attacked.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: none

Comments
Comments: Did this hike 2 years ago socked in the fog so I wanted to come back and enjoy it with the actual views. Great ridge walk with open ledges, some light scrambling in the constant up-and-down between knobs, wetlands with wild flowers and near 360 deg views. Only saw 1 person all day.
