Comments
Comments: I broke out the Drakes Brook Trail all the way up to the upper junction with the Sandwich Mountain Trail, at which point two others came up that trail. From there the three of us broke out the trail to the top of Jennings and then to Sandwich Dome. There were three other parties later on the SM Trail, so that one is now well packed. In fact, since the snow is only about 12-18 inches deep, the SM Trail is now rather bony. It would be helpful to have another foot of snow on it to cover the rocks better. With today's traffic and so any rocks, it might be worth just using micro-spikes on it to avoid damage to snowshoes. The Drakes Brook Trail had at least one party of two go down it, so it is now well broken out, too. For anyone doing both of those trails to make a loop, I would suggest going up the Sandwich Mountain Trail and down the Drakes Brook to avoid having to descend some hairy steep stuff on the north side of Noon Peak. Or perhaps take snowshoes off and micro-spike that section. Drakes Brook is pretty easy, and the stretch of SM Trail from Jennings to Sandwich Dome is easy.
