A nice day out with a couple of short bushwhacks. The abandoned Garfield Pond Cut-off Trail appears to get some use but once reaching the edge of the pond the herd path scatters, lots of blow downs near Garfield Ridge Trail. The original lower section of the Skookumchuck Trail is once again a bushwhack--a few orange blazes can still be found, hobblebush filling in quickly but footbed is still easy to follow. Once at the pond we decided to go up and back to Garfield's summit. We met a lot of people on the Garfield Ridge Trail, a dozen or more were people that were temporarily misplaced. Three people who thought they were headed to Galehead but had reached the Garfield Pond. Our time on the GRT between Skookumchuck and Mt. Lafayette we had three groups asking us if this was the Greenleaf Trail. Once we summited we perhaps saw a possible source of confusion might have been that there was a crowd around the trail sign that many people never saw it. We hung out on the North Peak of Lafayette on the rocks admiring the view and eating lunch. Many passing through Nobo AT hikers on the mountains. We backtracked to the Skookumchuck Trail and met a few groups working their way up the mountain later in the afternoon. Swell day. |
