Comments
Comments: Moderate climb for first mile or so. Reroute added some ups and downs and an extra 1/2 mile we didn't remember from years ago. Steep switchbacks next to falls then fairly level along the ponds to the herd path. Spent some time resting at the outlet for the ponds, admiring the awesome views, replenishing water and chatting with another hiker. Returned to the herd path, which takes a right where the main trail turns left, or vice versa depending on your direction. Be sure to take the left fork about 50 yards up the trail. This herd path was clear except for one small blowdown! In fact, it was a nicer pathway than many official maintained trails! Started out level but then climbs pretty much STRAIGHT UP: 800' in about .7 miles! Starts to level off near the summit which adds speed to your step because you know you're almost there! There's a small ledge area with a sign and a tremendous view towards Mt. Washington and the Presidential range. A grouse was standing there like a statue, didn't try to chase us away but did spread his tail feathers before moving behind a bush where he stayed the rest of our visit. The trip back down was not too bad, took us about half as long. Back down Nancy Pond trail to the car. The section down the switchbacks was a little hairy; a few slips and falls. Hadn't descended this way last trip so this was a surprise. Long, hot, humid day but we did it!
