Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No issues
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Sylvan is in good shape. Howker Ridge is getting a little brushy in a few spots, otherwise good. Pine Link: holy cow, there were a lot of blowdowns from the November storm. Trail is free of blowdowns. Many waterbars are full, some brushing is needed.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No dogs today. If you choose to do this route with your dog, bring plenty of water. After falls low down on Howker Ridge Trail, there is no water except for water running down Pine Link
Bugs
Bugs: No to very little wind, so the bugs were swarming at times on the descent, but were put in their place with 30% DEET.

Comments
Comments: Warm humid day - barely a breeze all the way. Could have packed an extra Nalgene - not a lot of water available on this route! Howker Ridge was a lot of fun to hike, and I did not see a soul until I reached the Osgood Trail, where I passed 10-15 northbound thru-hikers on my short trip to the summit. Pine link has a couple of long stretches with streams running down the trail over slippery moss.
