Hiked along a grassy (no ticks) forest road that was east of Downing and Eagle Cliff (can see the road on CalTopo). Hike southerly for .75 miles. Took a SW'ly bearing for Eagle Cliff.. then hiked over to Eagle Cliff West (jar). Took a NNE bearing for the swamp / pond outlet north of us, and came upon an old snomo bridge that crossed the outlet, along with a few signs in what was now an overgrown and choked area. (No evidence of old snomo trails at all). Proceeded up Downing Mtn. by hiking up it's south shoulder. Hiked to what is recognized as the summit (no jar) and then relished in the views from the fantastic view ledge. Could make out Carr Mtn to the west, Kineo and South Moosilauke to the north. As reported, there was an old decaying tarp near the summit that was part of someone's shelter. Descended the mountain hiking easterly until we intersected with the logging road we started on.
(Note: On many map layers, there appears to be another logging road 1.25 mi. from sharp bend... but it doesn't exist. We parked at the road that does exist, at 1.5 mile past the sharp bend.)
Fun day out with Rich F. and Rick W.! |
