Finally made it up to Bartlett Haystack, which has languished on my personal list for way too long, and even added on the Northeast peak... though I understand the North peak has better views. Mike and I started out walking the road briefly down to where it turns right, then followed an old logging road, occasionally marked by flagging up past many experiments, I mean, we're in an Experimental Forest after all. The going up to the main peak was generally good, with mostly open woods throughout, right up to the canister (Zach Porter being the last signer on 1/20/18). The prow-like view ledge didn't disappoint, and we spent a while lounging around. We retraced our steps a ways off the summit, then swung north to head for the Northeast peak, avoiding some really steep terrain and a couple of small cliffs. The going wasn't horrible until near the summit itself, which is thick and blowdown infested, but we found the jar (last signer from 7/8/18). Worked our way east to the northeast nubbin, and the top of the ledges there, where we were treated to great views toward North Conway. We then descended steeply through better woods to the unnamed stream that drains the area between the two peaks, and followed the stream down to XB443. Great day chewing on some Spruce with Mike! |
