What a fantastic trail. Don't let the size of the peak fool you - it might be the toughest sub-4000 footer I've climbed, with lots of open ledge to traverse and 3000 ft of elevation gain. The trails are very rocky and tough on the knees, and combined with the heat today this 12 mile hike really left me more tired than I had anticipated (in a good way, though). Extended hiking in an alpine zone, and the views from both Baldface summits are spectacular. The ridge hike to Meader is pleasant enough, with much softer footing and not too much altitude gain and loss, but does have limited views, as does the summit of Meader; I added it for the mileage, but if you are seeking views, probably not worth it. Only downer was the half mile road walk - it was really hot. Highly recommend this hike. |
