Crossings of Slippery Brook on FR 17A and the logging road just prior to intersecting Slippery Brook Trail (5413.1 I think) were both trivial rock hops on wet rocks, not much flow today. |

Made a tidy loop today, finally hitting Chandler, and getting to explore this now trail-less area. NWS forecast wasn't spot on, as it was cloudy, but drizzled most of the hike, raining more steadily at times on our descent. Took FR 17A (a few grown in sections, and many large waterbars) to its end, then bushwhacked up toward Chandler in mostly open woods, with moose paths occasionally easing the way. Followed off and on traces of the old Sable Mountain Trail, and would have continued on to see if we could follow its remnants up to South Baldface, but the persistent fog and drizzle made us decide otherwise after hitting Sable. Took the southeast ridge down from Sable to logging roads that eventually brought us out to the brook, and Slippery Brook Trail. Glad to have gotten to sign in to the register on Sable, after the lid on the jar was frozen shut when I last visited on 3/4/17. Good day out, even with the sogginess, with Mike and Ken. |
