Comments
Comments: This was a challenging bushwhack and workout. Although we saw the large bounder we could not find the birches as described that signify the start of the bushwhack. There were lots of down birches everywhere. Ground and weather conditions were not in our favor. Rain and snow showers made for very slippery conditions along with fallen leaves which obscured herd paths. We depended primarily on compass bearings. We did find a herd path just before the talus field. The talus field was wet and some of it had a coating of snow. We followed a herd path a short ways above the talus field which led us thru thick spruce and crawling thru blowdowns. On the return we were unable to follow any herd path and just used a compass bearing of 140 degrees. This worked out well for us despite the steep descent since the course completely bypassed the talus field, numerous blowdowns and entered more open woods. Near the bottom we followed a drainage area to the Carrigain Notch Trail several hundred feet north of where we started the bushwhack. Much easier descent. Finally I should add that we had some location backup with smartphone GPS apps but batteries became depleted with falling temperatures. Although we got the phones partially recharged at the summit for photos we didn’t rely on them much on the descent sticking with a standard compass.
