Comments
Comments: Decided to do a traverse from Waterville Valley to the Kanc to pick up the middle section of the Greeley Ponds Trail from Goodrich Rock to the Mt Osceola Trail. Raining slightly when we started but forecast said clearing by 10:00 AM so we went for it, not to be changed from rain to snow within the 1/2 hour and continued snowing and blowing until just before we finished at 2 PM when we saw blue sky. Greeley Ponds was nice walk to the Timber Camp Trail, basically a logging road with easy grades, tried traction but just kept balling up and went back to bare boots for the balance of the day with the 4-6" of wet snow. Timber Camp Trail was unbroken snow, but not a bad hike up, cleared just enough to get views of the painted cliffs of east Osceola, the twin peaks of Mount Kancamangus and the Tripyramids. Made it to the big cairn at the end. Interesting view of the ponds through the snow though. Saw no people until just before the end of our day. All in all a good hike for a wet day, boots did not stay dry but was happy I wore winter gaiters. Even though it was long car spot, it better than doing an out and back.
