Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: First crossing well-bridged by snow. Second was easy - snow-covered (but not deep or slippery) stones. Some shorties may have a hard time stepping from one to the other, but the water is very shallow here, so if you step in it your water proof winter boots will help you. And doing the right thing has its own reward - my traction lifted me above the water. Other tiny streams were open and easy to step over.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One blowdown on the small side trail that passes the two cascades. One other easy one on the Avalon Trail. Good trail - easy to follow - good blazing. Thank you!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several, well-behaved dogs enjoying their day. Saw a puppy on her very first hike (also well-behaved). Many happy years to her and her family!
Bugs
Bugs: UFI - one Unidentified Flying Insect. Saw a few other flying insects. Miss Arachnophobia saw two spiders, how ironic!

Comments
Comments: Only went as far as Avalon, did not see any postholes up to that point. trail is very packed down, most people were using microspikes. We went in with snowshoes, I changes to microspikes when we got to the really steep sections as I kept sliding with the snowshoes. A guy told me he found that the new plastic snowshoes were better for this sort of challenge (his own experience). Took me forever on the steep parts, would have called it a day if it ween't for Prema. Avalon was beautiful, clouds had dispersed by then, but it was cold and late in the afternoon so we only spent a few minutes. Put the lights on about half a mile before reaching the trailhead. Saw a guy out for a night hike to Avalon. He asked about the second water crossing; I forgot to tell him about the slippery sections. Hope he made out o.k.
