Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: From Mizpah to Jackson is a piece of work. Uncountable number of frozen bend-overs. Mostly frozen to the point where banging on with your ski poles is not particularly effective. The post holing from the warm up most have been some kind of fun for whoever was busting thru right down to ground level ... upwards of two feet in places. I'd been to Lafayette six days prior and while the snow was deep it was mostly powder the trees were not at beat up as they are now.

Comments: Crawford Path to Pierce to Mizpah and onwards to Jackson then down to Rt 302

The 1.6 miles from Mizpah to Jackson took slightly over two hours. The track was both obliterated by the frozen bend-overs, somewhat filled in with new wind blown snow and deeply trenched in places. There was a stretch just before the two meadows below Jackson's summit cone that for about 40-50 ft you just had to get down and crawl. No need to stand up because there was one after another blocking the way. The woods are dense enough that packing out a new trail off to the side is not necessarily the best option. Quite cold with minimal view on the final slabs to the cool little summit of Jackson. A total burn and a well earned summit no doubt. Fortunately there was no post-holing here and the Webster Jackson was in great shape after that epic struggle. It's going to be an interesting winter if this keeps up.
