Parking/Access Road Notes: Only a couple cars in the Basin lot at 8AM; lot is plowed and driveable by all. Watch out for the snowmobile riders whipping in to use the bathrooms.

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Most were fine with some open spots but after some looking around, a rock hop path could be found. The last crossing at the top of Cascade Brook Trail was a little sketchy as you could see running water in the middle, but there wasn't an easy way to rock hop. Ice was thick enough to jump over the open water, but was slushy at some spots.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few "bend overs" with the trees being weighed down by snow/ice. Along Cascade Brook Trail there were two blow downs that were at an awkward height making the climb over or crawl under decision tough. 5'6" or taller and you could go over. My 5'2" wife bit the bullet and crawled through the snow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Our Frankie had a wonderful day. If you're going to bring your dog and have them off leash, please be aware that there may be other dogs around. One fella was quite upset that our dog wanted to say hi to his dog; weird.

Comments
Comments: Great day hike to do a little red-lining. Bare booted up Basin-Cascades and the first part of Cascade Brook. After the last sketchy water crossing, we donned snowshoes and needed them the rest of the way to the lake as there was +/1 18" of snow on the trail. Some solitary determined soul had destroyed the trail here with post holes prior to last week's re-freeze. Please be considerate and wear snowshoes if they are needed. Seemed like the effort required for that person was immense on top of being unaware of what they were doing. Around the lake was pretty well consolidated, although some of the log bridges were covered in powder. Crossing over the lake from the hut to the east trail junction was quite windy and chilly! Lonesome lake trail is hard packed, but I would recommend spikes as it is a little slippery being so packed. Pemi Trail was pretty much unbroken with about 8" of powder on top of whatever melted and refroze recently. Very nice blue jay day!
