Comments
Comments: There were only 3 groups out today. one single, 3 young men and us 3 "older" folks. Road was fairly well packed though uneven and we spiked to the TH. We started in spikes on CNT and went about a 1/10 of a mile where we were sliding and doing all we could to miss the postholes. We switched to snowshoes and they were much better! We stayed in shoes for the rest of the day. The CNT is tough as it was a mix of postholes and soft snow (spring like). Once on the real ascent on SRT the snow was much better (though still postholes). Snow on SRT was unconsolidated though tracked out. There were 6 in snowshoes so if it sets up it will be in good shape. The one person was only in spikes and we passed him and his holes before Signal Ridge (he looked gassed which makes sense as he worked MUCH harder then we did in snowshoes). He must have turned back as we never saw him again. The 3 young men and our snowshoes set the trail pretty well though it was still loose at the top and soft down on the flats. The flats are uneven so it is not a nice smooth walk in though the upper part is better. The CNT follows the old trail and not the reroute. One narrow spot aside the river. OK now but if it gets icy could be a problem. SRR was snowmobiled on the way out as they went through and cleared the trees for the season. This made the road softer so we snowshoed to the car. When it sets spikes will be fine. Please wear snowshoes, it's easier on you and better for everyone else. Temps were great as was the company! Nice late fall hike.
