Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, December 16, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: York Pond Road south of the residential section was completely iced over with a hint of sand and probably no salt. Recommend having snow tires. Studded tires would even be better. Slow driving speed required to avoid slippage. The Unknown Pond parking was plowed and not icy. Met two fish hatchery guys driving by in a plow/sander who said they plowed out the Unknown Pond trailhead parking yesterday.

Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Numerous small run-off brooks were open water except one had a snow/ice bridge. Most could be crossed via a jump or stride although some required a rock hop

Comments
Comments: The snow surface was hard today with the onset of colder temperatures. There were boot holes in on the York Pond Trail and the lower portions of the Bunnell Notch Trail (probably from softened snow in the warm weather on Saturday). At higher elevations there were very few boot holes. Otherwise the snowshoe surface was solid today. Had to hook the cabin door. The Kilkenny Ridge Trail north from the summit of Mt Cabot was unbroken as was the Unknown Pond Trail at the parking area. The Kilkenny Ridge Trail heading up Terrace Mountain had not been used of late. Good views today from Bunnell Rock and from the clearing uphill from the cabin. Only four other hikers on the trail today.
