Spikes car-to-car today. Some snowpack from trailhead to about 2200’. A few bare spots in between. Much more bare between 2200’ - 2500’; not sure why. More snowpack above 2500’ with a decent monorail that you could feel. In some areas you could definitely punch through the crust. Above 3000’ still easily over a foot of snow. Losing the monorail meant postholing knee-deep.
Snowmobile track was packed out nicely to summit of Martha. Martha’s Mile seems like it had much less traffic on it. Some monorail, but there was postholing to be had. Scramble up to Owlshead ledge was icy, but nothing unmanageable given the numerous tree holds.
At this point, I wouldn’t recommend snowshoes unless you wanted them strictly for televators. I would not have wanted any part of that last scramble with snowshoes on. |
