Just wanted to comment on Jewell. Started with micros but was postholing every second step (to an annoying depth for my liking with the occasional knee deep drop) and trail was littered with postholes already. About a quarter way up stopped fighting it and threw the snowshoes on. Made it a PITA for a few short stretches where rocks and ground were showing but the time and caution these areas took to protect the snowshoes well outweighed the forever postholing sludge walk we were previously doing. Much better after the change. Just about treeline the monorail firmed up and spikes were perfect.
Passed two groups on the way down that were sporting micros only the entire way and trail had more holes added to it. Doable with whatever the climber wants to wear.....not sure there is a perfect choice at this point though until more snow or more melting takes place (more snow please!)
Awesome day on the mountain and Gablaghah grabbed his first winter season Presidential! |
