Hiking Trail Conditions Report

Peaks North Tripyramid, Middle Tripyramid, NH
Trails
Trails: Livermore Road, Livermore Trail, Scaur Ridge Trail, Pine Bend Brook Trail, Mt. Tripyramid Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, January 1, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Arrived at Livermore parking area around 7:45am, waited for the snowplow guy to complete plowing the lot, and I was in by 8am. First car there. When I completed my hike around 3pm, there were numerous cars, most likely all XC skiers (since I didn't see any other hikers all day.)
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No real water crossings. That said, there are a handful of small gullies on Scaur Ridge Tr (lower down near Livermore Tr) which have running water and no ice/snow bridge yet; they are trivial to navigate over.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few small/trivial blowdowns on Scaur Ridge Tr. There is a significant widowmaker (~ 30' above the ground) on the section of Livermore Tr leading up to the Scaur Ridge Tr - it's shown in pic #3 in the link below. Yellow blazes on Scaur/Pine Bend/Mt Tripyramid Trs really could use a freshening up ... they are very faint, if you can find them at all. I had a hard time following the trail in many places and relied significantly on GPS during my ascent.

Comments
Comments: Did this out/back and bagged North and Middle Tripyramid for the W48 list. We got 6" of new snow last night, and I broke trail the entire way in snowshoes. Needed some flotation, and the WV XC folks strongly discourage boots anyways, seeing as they groom the Livermore Rd/Tr for XC skiers. This hike was slow going due to the conditions, especially up Scaur Ridge Tr (took me about 2 hours to ascend to N Tripyramid, and just under 1 to descend back in my tracks.) It was raining off/on again and mid/upper 30's F while I started the hike up Livermore Rd/Tr, and this kept the snow soft and heavy. By the time I was on the ridge, it was breakable crust (~1") and stayed that way, even Livermore was breakable crust by the time I was back since the temps had dropped to mid 20's F. Windy AF all day, lots of blowing snow and drifting. In many places, my snowshoe tracks on the ridge were nearly filled in only 90 minutes later on my return. So my hard work to break trail will likely not help anyone else!
