Comments
Comments: We wore snowshoes from the parking area, to preserve the trail though we saw others with just microspikes. Mostly hard-pack with a few inches of snow on top. One area near the first bridge that was bare rock and leaves. We by-passed this on the way down to avoid walking on the rocks with our snowshoes. On the Holt-Carter and Carter trails there were spots of ice where the snow was pushed off, in a few of the steeper though short sections. Two of us had MSR snowshoes and they were good on these spots, but our friend had Tubbs and she was slipping quite a bit in spots. At the Warden's Cabin we switched to microspikes as it was icy under the snow. We went only a short distance above the cabin before turning back, as the ice was boilerplate, the snow was not sticking, and we did not have crampons with us. Microspikes were not really sticking into the ice. We all slid into the trees as we descended this little section. Put our snowshoes back on and went down to the High Cabin for lunch. That trail was fine though the track was only one snowshoe wide in sections - it appeared that the trail is severely eroded. There was ice underfoot on this trail but since it is not so steep we all did fine. Our descent was fine on the snowshoes. Beautiful day even though we were denied the summit with just .2mi to go!
