Full snow coverage, snowshoes roundtrip. Every person we saw today was wearing snowshoes...a lazy Microspiker would look like a postholing fool!
The roadwalk from Ferncroft to the woods was plowed but icy. Snowshoes worked best (Tubbs Flex Alps), as the full traction grips much better than spikes.
Snow was a little sticky down low with the somewhat mild temperatures today, but not too bad. A few open perks here and there. Above the water crossing, the trail was still soft. With multiple feet of snow, snowshoes were very much needed. Other than the perk near the old camp site (running water down the eroded trail), everything was snowcovered (no exposed ledge or ice). Very nice, even snowshoe track forming.
From the summit, we did the short bushwhack over to the over viewpoint.
No tracks on East Loop.
Rollins looked soft; all snowshoe tracks. One set of snowshoe tracks visible on Wiggin. Some tracks on the Cutoff.
Overall, a few inches of powder (Thursday) on top of a granular crust (Monday). |
