Comments
Comments: This was what we thought to be a nice easy hike up to South Mountain with some friends. When we got there they said they were planing on hiking until 11 or so and turning around. Once we hit the trailhead and took the Mountain Trail, we decided to do a big loop all the way to North Mountain and back using different trails. So 11+ miles later we returned. Conditions of course will be changing this week but we used microspikes for the entire hike, there were areas that we could have taken them off but it seemed more work than it was worth.
Having never gone beyond the Mountain Trail to South and only having gone to North from Round Pond Road through the Boulder Field it was fun to take the trails less traveled. We only saw people when got to the Split Rock/Shaw Tr junction, otherwise a NPD. The trails were mostly flat, less than 1000' of elevation change throughout the entire hike. We did have to cross Reservation Road (dirt road) twice. There is logging going on by the North Mountain Bypass Trail where they have added flagging to get you through the work area.
Always enjoyed the Boulder Field, Shaw, Split Rock and Woronoco were nice trails. We decided not to add any summits on this day since some in our party were using this as a conditioning for distance hike. Well at least we got a seat at the bar at the Tuckaway and I got the "Whole Tuckin' Farm" burger!
