 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parking on the Kanc, as the lot is unplowed. Lots of room on the shoulder for parking and plenty of space remaining when we rolled in at the crack of 11:30am. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Nothing serious |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Two or three trees across the trail but nothing that was difficult to get through. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Fantastic loop for dogs as long as they're smart enough not to fall off of the east ledges. |

Did the loop counter-clockwise. A group of early-birds beat us out there and broke trail up to the summit via the west branch. All 6 were in snowshoes and the track was pristine, thank you! They reported strong winds at the top, but by the time we arrived it had died down and we were able to enjoy the (incredible) views in comfort.
One brave soul had done the loop clockwise and broken the east branch by himself. With our tracks on top of his, the east branch had a very solid snowshoe track.
Bad news is that a group of 6 or 7 nimrods went up the west branch behind us and many of them were barebooting. Not sure if they did the full loop behind us or just an out and back, but the 0.8 mi from the loop back to the trailhead was a mess when we rejoined it. No super-deep postholes, but ankle-turners at every step if you're not careful. Hopefully some more considerate hikers will smooth things out before we get any serious freeze-thaw cycles.
Cold and clear skies made for fantastic views all day. Hedgeog definitely earns its place on 52WAV.
