Reaching this peak was a 2 day effort.
1/12 Basin Trail already well beaten from parking to campsite 6 in CG. Minimal breaking from CG to approx 1000', with snow getting progressively deeper up to 1500' elevation. Significant breaking, with difficult slabbing after trail turns W. From Rim Jct. easily followed Black Angel Trail, breaking approx 12"-16", to Blue Brook tent site. After several false starts, due to many trail-like openings, we were finally able to follow the BAT a short distance. Breaking snow depths now were 18"+ so we decided to turn back and return the next day. On our way back we smoothed out trail where necessary.
1/13 With no breaking required, on a trail that had hardened over night, we soon found ourselves at the point we had stopped yesterday. Fortunately the BAT was easy to follow although we were plagued by constant 18-24" breaking on relatively steep terrain. At 2200' we started our bw to the summit expecting the same breaking conditions. We were pleasantly surprised to be breaking only 6" on a deep, consolidated base. BW took us initially through young growth hardwoods, to a sprucy area well covered by snow, to the relatively open summit area and the recognized summit. |
