On Saturday, we heard that a group broke trail to West Royce so we wanted to take advantage of this before the next snow.
The trail was well broken, smooth and hard. Initially the trail musn't have needed much breaking but the snow got progressively deeper with elevation. From 900' to 2500'
the breaking effort must have been considerable in the deep snow on steep grades. For us, there was zero breaking effort until approx 2550', just .2 mile from the jct with the Burnt Mill Brook Trail. Here, the trail was no longer broken. The group must have turned back at this point. Now it was our turn to break. Wearing low flotation snowshoes - adequate for shallow snow and trails, but lousy for deep snow, we broke through deep snow to the summit - rewarded by clear blue skies and unlimited views.
Hats off to the group that broke so much of this trail.
