Beautiful day for a winter hike. Weather conditions were great with temps in the 20s with virtually no wind. The trail has been properly packed down by teams of hikers in snowshoes. Counted just five people on the trail through out the day - all except for one were sporting snowshoes. The last opted for microspikes which was a perfectly acceptable option. Very little in the way of postholing on the trail. Conditions on summit of Starr King were fantastic with glorious views of the snow covered Presidentials to the south and a pair of hungry Gray Jays demanding food. A big thank you to Ann from Rhode Island who joined me on the short jaunt from Starr King to Waumbek. Solo hiking is fine, but meeting a fellow hiker on the trail and joining forces makes the hike a little more enjoyable. All in all, a very enjoyable time in the White Mountains. |
