Comments
Comments: Despite the rain yesterday, winter has returned. If you plan to hike a 4K this weekend, you will need your snowshoes.

The rain event left a breakable crust, but did not eat up all of the major snowfall we just received. On top of that, 2 to 3 inches of fresh powder has fallen.

Every hiker on this trail today used snowshoes. The lack of a packed footbed underneath (since there was minimal traffic after the big snowfall) would result in nasty postholing. Other than a couple of whole snowshoe postholes half a foot deep, there were no postholes (thanks to there being barebooters). The snowpack is many feet deep. The only ice I encountered was when I cut off the upper hiking trail and emptied onto the closed Cannon ski trails. There is active drifting going on, so my snowshoe tracks were being erased in a matter of minutes up high.
