| Comments: |
After a 2.5 mile snowshoe walk on the Sandwich Notch Rd., I broke out the Algonquin Trail until its intersection with the old road/herd path heading east (beyond the intersection with the old North Road). From here the path was relatively easy to follow all the way to Black Mountain Pond, passing through many open hardwood sections and finally the more challenging spruce trap area near the pond.
No sign of activity at the pond — very few people visit this remote gem in winter. There is a stunning ice cliff on the southern side of the higher of the two Black Mountains, clearly visible from the pond.
Total time/distance: 7 hours/11 miles |
