Comments
Comments: Although Paugus was not our intended route I figured I would include it for informational purposes. A little red-lining overnight trip with my brother. Snow conditions are a crusty layer with deep powder underneath, especially at elevation. Gordon path was broken by skis to a point but then we broke the rest out. We were happy to find Cabin Trail broken and made our way up a bit and found some wonderful hardwood forest to camp in. The broken portion of Cabin trail ended about a mile in, so the hard work commenced. The crust was supportive in spots and with my MSRs with tails I was able to float on some portions, others I was breaking in about 6-12". Past the Whitin Brook intersection the side hill portion of Cabin trail was a tough slog, definitely not for the faint of heart as sections are steep and the snow kept sliding down. We were happy to find Lawrence trail broken at the end of Cabin trail. Looks like no one has continued on to Paugus so it is unbroken above that point. At some point a bit before the Kelly Trail intersection some post holes appeared, I was amazed someone made it that far in without snowshoes. Kelly trail is unbroken. At Paugus Pass it looks like someone barebooted up Walden trail, and Oliverian Brook trail is also unbroken. We descended via Old Mast trail with occasional post holes showing up but overall decently packed but unstable until the lower portions where it looks like it has seen some skier traffic. Awesome hiking as tough as it was breaking through crusty snow. I definitely recommend snowshoes with new snow expected in the next couple days.
