19 Mile Brook was packed enough (at least to the jct with Carter Dome) to use spikes, and spikes were okay up until Zeta Pass, but while the monorail is stable (but narrow), the snow was still powdery and made for tough gripping, making snowshoes the best bet. I had initially planned to head up Carter Dome and over to Hight and then back out, but it was relatively clear early and I wanted to catch the view from Hight, so I headed that way first. The last quarter mile or so is steep up Hight, and there was quite a bit of slipping in the powder. The trees are all across the trail, so watch for branches that want to blind you. The trail from the summit wasn't broken, and I didn't think I'd be able to follow it, so I headed back down, basically skiing on my snowshoes because of the powder. Carter Dome Trail was broken, but I decided I didn't want to ski down Carter Dome, so I grabbed South Carter instead. The path is broken past the summit of South, and I assume at least to Middle Carter, but since I didn't know for sure I headed back the way I came instead of heading to Middle and down Imp. Fantastic day, the views from Hight were fantastic, and to top it off, I drove home and watched the Pats win the Super Bowl. Doesn't get much better. |
