Valley Way was "broken out" but snow had the consistency of moist mashed potatoes on this above freezing day. Snowshoes worked ok until a mile from the hut where we started post holing with the snowshoes on. Trail pretty beaten up with lots of post holes the mile before the hut. Changed to crampons from the hut to the summit. One person made it in spikes. Water running over the ice everywhere. Even slid a few inches on the wet snow with crampons on. Very windy on the summit ridge but not blowing you over. Caught a few glimpses of the valleys below between breaks in the clouds. Snow on the Valley Way was even more unstable on the way down. |
