We tried to park at the end of the Little River Rd, but there is a sign that makes it clear you are not allowed to park there or hike from there. So, we parked at the end of the Haystack Rd. Great walking on the snowmobile trail. Turned right at the road blocked with three boulders - Forest Rd 304 (no sign). We snowshoed from here. Just past the sand pit (almost within sight from the sandpit) look for a trail leading up to the right, follow for ten minutes or so. When the trail/road looks clear and heads to the right, go left on the trail that has saplings growing in it. Follow a little ways until you see a cherry tree across the road (partially buried by snow, but ends showing). Veer left off road and follow the edge of the old clear cut. On our way up, we went straight to the clear cut, but it is no longer clear and very thick with little trees. Head to the ridge and follow the ridge up. Stay a little to the right to avoid the steeper ledges and thickets. There is old flagging here and there. We rarely broke through the crust, but our snowshoe trail will be visible for a couple days. Lots of blowdowns near top, but easy enough to get around them. Canister is frozen shut, but we had nice views today. |
