Comments
Comments: Took the Carter Moriah trail (or Rattle Creek it might be called) from route 2 heading south. Up to the Rattle Creek shelter it was pretty firm and stomped out - mostly stable. I would recommend light traction for most. A heavier person may want to wear snowshoes as one of the heavier guys in our group (also with a fully loaded pack) was postholing every now and then. After the leanto, my friends and I (group of 4) broke trail up most of the way to Mt. Moriah; so snowshoes are required. The icey crust of the snow was sometimes strong enough to support us; of course mostly on the slopes running perpendicular to the trail. The trail is marked with a dark red paint which was hard to find some times; so that slowed us down looking for it several times. Areas right along streams or across streams were not always complete snow bridges, but still easily crossable. Long story short, the sustained winds, cold temps, stopping to find the trail, and etc. got to us and we turned around.
