| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
19 mile has at least a half dozen leaners that you can easily get under. one we had to walk around. snow depth is so high on the ridge that the smaller spruce and branches have encroached into trail snagging on packs and almost taking out eyeballs. i can't remember if it was North Carter tr, or about two miles up the southern arm of Imp tr where there is a leaner that could give you a head injury if you're not paying attention. it's about 6" in diameter and blends into the spruce branches. |

a pretty great day! winds were not as high as predicted. going up 19 mi brook trail was carpeted in the broken off tips of spruce branches from the high winds on Saturday. trails are in great shape. hard packed. wore spikes up to the hut, and then decided to put on full crampons for the leg up to the Dome and the remainder of the day. could've done it in spikes, but there were a couple of steep spots with ice bulges that made me happy for the crampons. it was good practice nonetheless. we brought snowshoes, but never needed them as long as we stayed on the monorail. just about everyone else we encountered was wearing spikes. didn't see any other hikers after leaving the hut as we traveled the ridge, but it looked like at least 2 people had gone before us. |
