Comments
Comments: Beyond parking spot, Gilman Valley Rd. is a maintained snomo trail.
From parking spot, started walking on snomo trail - the main trail entered from the left and continued straight, a secondary trail took off to the right. We returned via this secondary trail.
We snowshoed on snomo trail S for approx 1 mile. Here we turned W into logging yard and then up a whippy old logging/skidder road. This appears as a dashed line on topos.
Soon we encountered the secondary snomo trail and followed this until approx 1000' elevation where it veered S - just before a bridge. We then left the snomo trail for a whippy skidder road and/or wide open woods to the Bald/Whittier col.
Mt. Whittier
turned N in wide open hardwoods, then open softwoods, then through a short potentially sprucy area to the recognized highpoint. Retraced our steps to the col.
Bald Mt.
From the col, turned S through wide open hardwoods, then open softwoods, then through a long, potentially sprucy area to the recognized highpoint. Retraced our steps to the col.
From the col we retraced our steps down to the secondary snomo trail met on our way up and followed this all the way back to the parking area.
bw conditions:
surface - consistent breaking of 2-4" on a consolidated base
vegetation - wide open hardwoods, open softwoods, potentially sprucy areas that never materialized
grades - always easy
snomo trails - good conditions in the morning but, lousy, tiring conditions for the return due to churned mashed potato consistency snow.
