Started up the Cog at 7A, roughly 0 degrees. Cog was packed powder/ice until Jacobs ladder where it turned into some serious ice and side hilling. Thanks to Fuzz for an enjoyable hike up and taking the lead towards top. I headed up and over Clay which was amazingly quiet. Lost the trail towards the bottom so i rock hopped over to the loop trail to avoid destroying vegetation. Per usual in the winter up in the Northern Presis, there was some impressive drifts and some serious ice. Really tough styrofoam snow and sweet snow designs from the wind. Summited Jefferson and had the top to myself for a good 25 mins before a crew showed up and a gentleman finished his winter 4K’s. What a day for that!
The top of Jewell was a bit icy and i took a few spills on the ice. Guess its time for some new crampons. Cruised on out to the Cog following a woman’s sled tracks. She was impressive.
Overall, a special day to be above tree line in the winter. One for the books! |
