Comments
Comments: 30-hour adventure (loop clockwise) tested endurance!! East Side Trail up to Thoreau Falls Trail pretty much broken out most of the way. Lost TFT in the upper flats, and along the upper portions. Wandered in loops near the falls. Finally resorted to GPS for that and Shoal Pond Trail descent. Even with GPS, trailfinding was tough, esp on Shoal Pond Tr, in the dark. Never were really able to kick and glide on Shoal Pond... spruce traps an skis didn't mix!!! Seemed like nobody had been on Shoal Pond trail at all. The crust was good for support, but, with moose postholes, trailbreaking was very difficult. Get in there now if you're thinking of it while it's tracked out (and not completely grown-in)!!! Near rivers and Stillwater Jct, we wandered around in the dark for a while - had trouble finding trails up opposite banks. Eventually ran out of water (refilled on streams last 5 miles out - higher streams too frozen and inaccessible to get to) but not a sense of humor!!! By the way, there were MANY ski tracks crossing Pemi at site of old suspension bridge. Also, a few ski tracks down the North Fork.
