Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: About 3 cars in the lot when we arrived at 9:15 AM. Leaving around 12:30, the lot was packed with at least one car waiting for a space. Getting there, the roads are partially dirt roads and plowed, but not totally clear. There are some big frost heaves, so drive with care.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There are a few small water crossings. The first 3 are rock-hops/step-overs. The rest were bridged by snow and ice.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Shortly after you leave the parking lot, the trail splits. Bear right. From there, the trail is well-blazed and well-trod, so it is easy to follow.

Dog-Related Notes: We saw a few dogs on the trail. They seemed happy and well-behaved.

Bugs: None.

Comments
Comments: A beautiful day and a great hike. We started out wearing Hillsound spikes, but switched to snowshoes about 100 yards in. This trail is pretty steep the whole way up, and the heel lifts on the snowshoes were a big help. There are some nice views of the lakes on the way up. Just before the summit, there's a nice overlook that's worth a visit. The view from the summit is a great look at the Sandwich Range, including Chocorua. We switched back to spikes for the descent. The snow started getting a little soft later in the morning as the temperature warmed up, but spikes were still the right call on the way down. The trail is pretty well packed, so post-holing was not an issue. However, be careful not to step too far off the trail - just a few inches off the trail and the contour drops sharply in some spots. Mt. Israel is well worth the hike. Steeper and more challenging than I had expected, but we were still able to get up and down (including stops at the summit and at the overlook) in less than 3 hours.
