Wind at the base was disconcerting, as were the two hikers who quit after ~1 hr of hiking. There are several fields within the first 1/4 mile of hiking which allow the wind to really blast you and scare you off. Eye protection is a must, and I don't mean aviators. The trail was well packed aside from 1-2 inches of powder the wind had blown onto it, light traction was sufficient most of the way. Toward the ridge it gets steep and microspikes wouldn't cut it. On the ridge you start to get buffeted by the wind I would guess was a sustained 70+mph. Right at the bottom of the final ascent you're hit with 90+ mph wind, which knocked me over several times. I'm 185lbs and wearing crampons, and I could barely stand, plus the visibility was very low. It was hard to find the cairns, despite them being 5 feet tall. I couldn't see the summit and we made the decision to turn back. We were probably less than 500 feet from the top, but continuing on would have been dumb. Of course ymmv, but this was our experience. |
