Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: i parked in a large plowed out area on the north side of rt 26 in colebrook a couple hundred yards west of balsams brook drive. balsams brook is a private road used to access a driveway and i wouldn't recommend parking there, but walking it for a short distance to access a good starting point for this hike seems reasonable.

Comments
Comments: from balsams brook road i climbed over a large snowbank to access a gated extension of the road heading up into a sand pit. from the top of the pit i started a bushwhack up the north ridge of northwest dixville in open woods using old skid roads for good stretches. snow depths varied based on wind drifting, but i was generally going in 6-12" to start with deeper areas. this was over a good solid base. around 2200 i crossed a snomo trail and continued up the ridge in woods that had seen much more wind. this left just supportive crust in spots with windpacked drifts in others up to the summit and recognized highpoint. given the good conditions i opted to continued to west peak. i started following the southeast ridge then dropped below the crest to avoid some spruce. i angled down in good woods into the large cut between the peaks. snow remained supportive and depths on top were consistently less than earlier. i was able to weave around any sprucy patches down to cross the small brook in the drainage then headed up towards west peak aiming to hit a little notch east of the highpoint. this route let me avoid some steeper pitches below the summit. deeper less consolidated snow, but more good woods, up to the summit and recognized highpoint. i returned in my tracks.
