Comments
Comments: With a forecast for clear skies and low winds I couldn't resist. I needed Jefferson for winter and I'd yet to traverse over Mt Clay. I broke trail from the Ammo lot to the cog junction. Just after that I was happy to see snowshoe tracks coming out of the woods and broken trail ahead. After breaking treeline things got rocky so I switched to spikes. Once reaching Gulfside there were many icy patches and wind slab. I rocked spikes to summit Jefferson and down towards Edmands col where I switched to full crampons. They were helpful on the sloped snow field. Up over Mt Clay loop had seen a pair of crampons but it was a marvelous trek up. There's a snow field on the north side of clay where you cannot find a single cairn but if you angle uphill you'll find then prior to reaching the summit. I finished off Mt Clay loop and hung a right onto Gulfside which is Rocky and icy to the intersection with Jewell. By then the sun was setting and I was happy to enjoy it. Descending Jewell above treeline was a bit choppy but spikes or crampons are best for this section. Snowshoes back on just prior to treeline and I was happy to find the trail packed well. Monorail is still unstable so snowshoes are best bet especially with more snow forecast in coming days.
