I was looking for an "easier" day after a 13 mile day on the Carters yesterday so this fit the bill. I took a red-liners approach (per usual) to accomplish another peak for my W48. Headed up KRT from the tram lot with snowshoes from the start. It is packed solid but the use of the televators were nice. Upon reaching the ski glades I switched to full crampons as I was carrying them and it made me more comfortable crossing the steep slopes of ice and powder. Wore crampons all the way to the summit though could have switched to snowshoes again after the left turn away from the glades. I couldn't believe it I had the summit to myself! From there snowshoes went back on and remained for the rest of the trip. Descended via Hi-Cannon on a powder over packed trail. The few inches of fresh powder felt great. However, if you remember the 5 D's of Dodgeball that is what you are looking forward to! Dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge! Another day battling branches. The ladder is completely buried and I gently slid down using my snowshoes to brake. I took Dodge Cutoff to Lonesome Lake and crossed the lake to the hut where I stopped for a good hour long break and had some coffee. I knew what was to come. A quick and easy descent from Lonesome Lake (spikeable) to the Pemi Trail where the slog really began. It had been tracked hour prior to the last storm and some areas had drifted over completely. I certainly am a glutton for punishment saving 2 miles of trail breaking for the end of the day. Let me tell you the side hilling along Profile Lake is spectacular. There is however a nice vantage of the "Eaglet" from there. The Pemi trail seems seldom used in winter but does provide an okay route back to the tram lot. The recreation path would definitely be much easier. All in all a great day to be outside. |
