Peaks Hedgehog Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: UNH Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, March 9, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot is plowed, but compacted snow/ice. Be careful pulling out onto the Kanc; you almost need a running start to get over the ice mound if you don't have 4WD.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Everything covered/bridged, for now.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few large blow downs maybe a mile in (pines with needles on still). Plenty of leaners but nothing major. Most of the duck/crawl unders would probably be walk unders without the snow pack as it is.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw 1 and heard 1 in the distance. Perfect day and trek for them.

Comments
Comments: UNH Trail clockwise from the lot. Awesome highway of very well packed trail most of the way. Looked like another group went out a few days earlier, as there were fresh tracks, but drifting up on the ledges and open areas covered most of the trail. No troubles though, as the numerous FRESH yellow blazes mean you'd have to try to lose your way. The snow depth is impressive (almost covered the signs at the loop junction) but leads to lots of face-poking branches and hang ups on packs. Areas in the sun and down low were getting pretty sticky due to the warm up today, but it was a pretty perfect day for winter hiking. My 9 year old's first winter summit! And he discovered butt-sledding all on his own.
