Comments
Comments: Saturday was a beautiful day to be out in the mountains! I've been nervous to do the Osceolas in the winter because of the steepness going up to East Osceola (worried about ice), but the trail conditions were excellent! We opted for snowshoes on the way up, the heel lifts were a HUGE help. Saw a lot of people in microspikes, the trail is packed but still a bit soft. They probably would have had an easier time in snowshoes, I saw lots of backsliding. Due to the snow pack there were some great views along the ridge going up towards East Osceola. Summit cairn is completely buried. I didn't have it in me to get over to Osceola, but my husband went out and back. He said trail conditions were great, but as to be expected LOTS of branches to the face. On the descent we both opted for crampons as snowshoes and microspikes didn't seem to work well for most people (saw a lot of unintentional falls and slides). Crampons gave just enough grip that we both made it down the steeps without any falls.
