Trails: UNH Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, March 23, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The lot is semi-plowed. A non-4WD can reach it down the short access road if driven with care. The tricky part is getting out. It takes a bit of inertia to get up the small rise back onto the highway. If you can, bring an orange cone, a 4WD vehicle or a trail buddy to spot traffic for you.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few duck-unders. Several the-snowpack-makes-your-head-high-enough-to-get-twigs-to-the-faces.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any. Drifts looked like they'd bog down a dog.
Bugs

Comments: UNH Trail--long side only

Snowshoes are a must. The trail looks semi-packed near the trailhead but parts further up UNH might as well have been unbroken the way the wind was filling everything in.

The long way up UNH (2.1 miles from fork to summit) was navigable but the short way back down (1.0 miles from summit to fork) wasn't. The yellow blazes are new enough and visible enough, but there is a spot past the summit where, I guess, they are painted on the rocks under the snow instead of on the trees above it. I spent about half an hour trying to figure out where the trail continued to the north with no luck. Someone who's been there before and remembers the way might be able to do it, and I can't speak to finding your way from the counterclockwise direction, but I could not manage it. The driving wind was filling in my footprints, so even if I'd been willing to bushwhack through a protected area, I had no guarantee of retracing my steps. I eventually gave up and went back the way I came. If you're going up there Sunday, and any of my footprints in the clearing north of the summit remain, do not follow; they are no indicator of the way to go.
