It was a mixed bag of spring and winter like conditions. The start was a hard packed trail, but quickly post-holed up to my hip. Snowshoes the rest of the way to keep above and from postholing. As we ascended, the snow was unbroken, not too deep but crunchy and granular. At the Kelly/Lawrence trail junction, that’s where the trail was completely unbroken with powderly drifts around 6-8â€. I started to lose the trail after the Cabin trail junction and we lost and found the Lawrence trail before finally calling it at about 3/4 mile to the summit of Paugus. On the way down the trail softened up and was a mixed bag of snow, slippery wet snow, mashed potatoes, and postholing in snowshoes towards the end of Kelly Trail. Great day no less! |
